ESJF visits the Markuszów Jewish cemetery for rededication ceremony

Yesterday, a rededication ceremony was held at the Markuszów Jewish cemetery, which was fenced and protected earlier this year thanks to the work of the ESJF and its partners, Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland – FODŻ and Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland under funding the Auswärtiges Amt, in memory of Jews from the village and the surrounding areas, who were murdered during the Shoah.

The event was attended by Piotr Puchta, CEO of FODZ, Dan Oren from the Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland, who is also a descendant from the local Jewish community as well as the local people and authorities of Markuszów, including the Mayor, Mr. Leszek Łuczywek and Secretary of the Markuszów Municipality, Mrs. Bożena Tkaczyk-Żurawska, Chief Rabbi of Poland, Rabin Michael Schudrich, Bishop Mieczysław Cisło and President the Matzevah Foundation, Dr. Steven D. Reece, whose organisation did fantastic work clearing the cemetery prior to the ceremony. Sophie Pownall, ESJF Communications and Media officer was also in attendance.

Following the ceremony, the attendants gathered at the local Municipal Office, learnt about the history of the local Jewish community from the local people and spoke about the potential of future cooperation.

We would like to thank all those who attended and highlighted the importance of preserving Jewish heritage as well as our partners who organised the ceremony and supported the reconstruction of the Markuszów Jewish cemetery fence ensuring its long term protection and the sanctity of those buried there.
