ESJF held a series of educational events in Romania as part of the beginning of the cooperation with the Democratic Forum of Germans in Satu Mare.
In Satu Mare, students of Class 11A from Johann Ettinger School took part in an educational program on the preservation of Jewish cemeteries, organized by ESJF together with Democratic Forum of Germans in Satu Mare.
The students attended a lecture introducing the history of the local Jewish community, as well as basic skills for reading Hebrew epitaphs and interpreting tombstone symbols. After a short coffee break, the group visited the Jewish cemetery in Ardud, which was recently fenced by ESJF. During the visit, participants put their newly acquired skills into practice while exploring a heritage site many of them had never visited before.
At the cemetery, the group was also joined by Ovidiu Marius Duma, the Mayor of Ardud. We are very grateful to Elisa Vaughan and Josef Hölzli for co-organizing the event, as well as to the teachers and principal of Johann Ettinger School, and the Jewish Community of Satu Mare for their cooperation and support. We look forward to holding more events in the region in the future.
This educational event was financially supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
