Jews are first mentioned in Halych in 1436. Until the early 20th century, Halych was the only town in Galicia where two Jewish communities coexisted in parallel: the Rabbanite Jewish community and the Karaite community.
The оld Jewish cemetery in Halych has been completely destroyed, and its exact boundaries and date of establishment are difficult to determine.
The new Jewish cemetery in Halych was established no later than the mid-19th century. Today, approximately 100 tombstones remain, dating from the mid-19th century to the 1930s.
In addition, Halych is home to a unique Karaite cemetery containing more than 200 tombstones dating from the mid-18th century to 1997.
The fencing of the new Jewish cemetery in Halych was carried out by the ESJF and funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office).
