The Melčice Jewish cemetery is located in the Trenčín region, one of the areas with the highest levels of cemetery preservation in the country. Today, 21 tombstones remain at the site, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. One reason for this relatively high level of preservation is the mountainous terrain, which has limited later development and construction in the area.

Moreover, compared to many other countries, Slovakia has a relatively high overall level of Jewish cemetery preservation – around 80%. Many necropolises belonging to communities destroyed during the Holocaust, though left without regular care, were neither demolished nor built over and have survived to the present day.
More details on the state of Jewish cemeteries in Slovakia are available in our latest report, linked in the comments.
The fencing of the Melčice Jewish cemetery was funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office). We are grateful for the cooperation of our partners, Židia na Slovensku (the Federation of Jewish Communities in Slovakia), and our national coordinator, Henrich Stern.
