The ESJF is back in Serbia with surveys

ESJF Senior Surveyor Ian Galevskii has returned to Serbia this autumn, when the vegetation is less dense, to complete the national survey of Jewish cemeteries that began earlier in the summer.

The surveys are conducted with the help of drones, which allow us to create detailed 3D terrain models to ensure the most accurate fence installation. During this survey phase, we have already documented 24 Jewish burial sites in Serbia.

The process of creating 3D models is fully automated, and the use of drones significantly speeds up the identification of tombstones — sometimes it is even the only way to access certain cemetery sites.

These surveys are made possible thanks to the financial support of the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office) and in cooperation with our partners at the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, in particular our country coordinator, Ladislav Trajer.
