ESJF holds colloquium on preservation and documentation of Jewish cemeteries in Czechia

Just a few days before Rosh Hashanah, the ESJF, with the support of the Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany), held a colloquium “Restoration, Care, and Documentation: Jewish Cemeteries in the Czech Republic” for more than 50 participants from across the country.

This event was organized in cooperation with our local partners: Jewish Community of Prague / Židovská obec v Praze, Federace židovských obcí v ČR, Ústav dějin umění Akademie věd ČR, v. v. i., Židovské muzeum v Praze – Jewish Museum in Prague, and Židovské památky v Česku / Jewish heritage in Czechia. We are grateful to Katrin Bock of the Cultural Department of the German Embassy in Prague, Tomáš Winter, Director of the Institute of Art History at the Czech Academy of Sciences, Karol Efraim Sidon, Chief Rabbi of the Czech Republic, František Bányai, Chairman of the Jewish Community in Prague, and Michael Pelíšek, General Director of the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic, for their opening words. Květa Svobodová, Petra Vladařová, Daniel Polakovič, Jan Kindermann, and Eva Janáčová provided the lectures at this educational event.
Participants also had the opportunity to explore the Jewish cemeteries in Prague under the expert guidance of Pavel Šteffl, Michaela Wallisová, Pavel Veselý, and Arno Pařík.

The colloquium was organized by Petra Vladařová from the Jewish Community of Prague, Eva Janáčová from the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Alexandra Fishel from the ESJF. We were also honored to welcome a delegation from the National Heritage Institute in Brno.
