The ESJF has fenced the sixth Jewish cemetery in Hungary this year

The Vámosújfalu Jewish cemetery is located in the woods behind the municipal cemetery. On the other side, it borders a road, which previously posed a risk of damage before the fence was installed.

The cemetery was established after 1866. Today, around 20 tombstones remain, most dating to the first half of the 20th century.

Jews first settled in Vámosújfalu in the early 19th century. The small Jewish community had its own cemetery; at the same time, the Jews of Vámosújfalu belonged to the nearby community of Olaszliszka, located about one and a half kilometers to the southwest. Olaszliszka was well known for its winemaking and was also one of the major centers of Hasidism in Hungary, home to the Liska Hasidic dynasty.

The fencing of the Jewish cemetery in Vámosújfalu was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office), the help of our partners at the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ-Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége), and especially our country coordinator, Mária Baranyi.
