The ESJF has fenced the Jewish cemetery in Krompachy, Slovakia

The process of physically protecting this site was extremely challenging. As the photos show, the cemetery sits on a very steep slope and right next to a road. Because of this, fencing it off was an urgent task – the site had already suffered heavy damage in the previous century.

The Jewish cemetery in Krompachy was founded in the mid-19th century, with the earliest preserved tombstone dating to 1869, and by the 1880s a Chevra Kadisha (burial society) had already been established. The cemetery was heavily damaged at the end of World War II and later partially demolished by the municipality in 1976. Today, around 45 tombstones remain, dating from 1869 up to the World War II period.

This fencing project at the Krompachy Jewish cemetery was made possible with the support of our partners at Židia na Slovensku (Federation of Jewish Communities in Slovakia), particularly Henrich Stern, our national coordinator.
