Čurug is a village in Vojvodina, an autonomous province in northern Serbia. Jewish presence in Čurug may date back to the beginning of the 19th century.
One of the major findings of the ESJF survey in Serbia is the pronounced geographic concentration of Jewish cemeteries. Of the 129 sites registered, 119 are located in Vojvodina, and only ten cemeteries were identified outside Vojvodina, scattered across central and southern Serbia.
The date of establishment of the Čurug Jewish cemetery is unknown. Today, the cemetery has been completely demolished, with no gravestones surviving. However, its exact location was identified with the help of the village head. The cemetery was probably destroyed more than 50 years ago.
The story of the Čurug cemetery is another reminder of how vulnerable Jewish cemeteries can be. When they are left unprotected, traces of these historic communities can disappear completely. Proper fencing is therefore an essential step in protecting the remaining sites.
