The ESJF has completed the fencing of the Jewish cemetery in the village of Szegi in northeastern Hungary. The cemetery, which contains approximately 30 tombstones, is now physically protected.
The site also has a memorial to those who perished in the Shoah. In 1944, shortly after Passover, the Jews of Szegi were deported to the Sátoraljaújhely ghetto. A few days before Shavuot, they were sent to Auschwitz.
After the war, 12 Jewish residents from Szegi and the nearby village returned. The survivors erected a memorial to honor the victims, however, none of them remained in the village, and the community was not reestablished.
The fencing of the cemetery was made possible thanks to the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), the assistance of our partners at the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ-Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége), and the dedicated work of our country coordinator, Mária Baranyi.
