Historical overview

The exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. According to the dates on preserved gravestones, it already existed in the early 20th century. First, it appears on Russian maps of 1895.

Little is known about the Jewish community life in Velyki Berezhtsi. The Jewish population stood at 428 in 1900. A Jewish elementary school, synagogue and Jewish cemetery operated. The Polish guide to Volyn in 1929 describes Velyki Berezhtsi as a Jewish town (“żydowskie miasteczko”).
