Sastin-Straze Jewish Cemetery

The Jews rented the land for the cemetery in Šaštín from the landowner Imrich Czobor in the second half of the 16th century. It is known from a written reference from 1725 that the cemetery was at the end of the town in a location called Za Czapragem. At the end of the 18th century, however, the capacity was no longer sufficient, so the Jewish community obtained permission to establish a new cemetery in 1790. The last burial on it was recorded in 1942. Its most prominent landmark is the family tomb of Emanuel Pollak, but no one was buried in it. After the Holocaust, the cemetery fell into disrepair and the bricks from the enclosure were lost. The ceremonial hall, through which the entrance gate led, also completely disappeared. Today's panel enclosure made of aerated concrete is from the 90s of the last century. The renovation of the cemetery through the Heritage Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries was initiated by David Herzka from Great Britain in 2012. Other main sponsors of the renovation were Jonathan Strasser, Shea Oizer Reiner, Abraham Krausz. Restoration work at the cemetery began in the summer of 2014, 855 tombstones were repaired.
