Historical overview
The Jewish settlement in Olsztynek, formerly known as Hohenstein, began in the early 19th century. By 1831, eight followers of Judaism resided in the town, and this number grew to 111 by 1880. However, due to various historical events, the Jewish population in Olsztynek experienced a decline around the turn of the century, likely attributed to economic emigration, with many relocating to America. By 1933, only 33 Jews remained in Olsztynek, and two years later, the local synagogue was sold. Unfortunately, the fate of the Jewish population in Olsztynek under Nazi rule is not well-documented, but it is believed that some may have left the town while others tragically fell victim to the atrocities committed by the Nazis.
Regarding the cemeteries, there were two Jewish cemeteries in Olsztynek. One was located at the present site of Szkolna Street, where the "Farmer" housing cooperative estate now stands. Regrettably, the area of the old Jewish cemetery has since been demolished and replaced with a multistory apartment building. No traces of the original cemetery, including tombstones, have been preserved. This loss stands as a poignant reminder of the historical Jewish presence in Olsztynek.
