Historical overview
The old Jewish cemetery was established on the outskirts of the city, outside the city walls, at the intersection of today's Działyńskich and Sienkiewicza Streets, most probably at the beginning of the 19th century. The last burials were made around 1885.
In 1938, due to the financial problems of the religious community based in Brodnica, which also administratively included the New Town, the management decided to sell to the city the area of the necropolis that had not been used for over half a century. The city council planned to transfer the tombstones and remains of the deceased to the new Jewish cemetery, and to create a municipal market place in the acquired place.
After World War II, a building was erected in the cemetery, which houses, among others, the City Library and the Center of Non-Governmental Organizations.
