Historical overview

The new Jewish cemetery in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie was established in 1885 in the area known as Folwark. The necropolis covers a plot of land on a rectangular plan with an area of 0.44 ha, at today's Grunwaldzka Street (next to property no. 32). Soon a funeral home was erected along with the caretaker's apartment. In 1939, the value of this building was estimated at PLN 10,000, and the area of the necropolis itself - at PLN 5,000. Just before the war, tombstones were also moved here, and most likely the remains of the dead from the old cemetery, which was sold to the city. The cemetery was devastated by the Germans during World War II. Apparently, in 1948 there were tombstones on its site, which were later used as paving slabs at the buildings of the detention center and the court. Even in 1990, about 10 preserved tombstones were mentioned in the cemetery. One of them had the date: 1840. In 1995, during the renovation of the pavement next to the court building, numerous matzevot were discovered. They were secured, and the city authorities, together with the Nissenbaum Family Foundation, intended to move them to the cemetery. However, these plans were not implemented. To this day, in the necropolis converted into a park, no traces of the tombstones have survived. (sztetl.org.pl)
