Historical overview

The Jewish cemetery of Mérk was presumably founded after 1892, since in does not appear on the cadastral maps prior to that date. The only found Jewish tombstone dates to 1939.

Nevertheless, Jews are reported to have lived in Mérk since the mid-19th century. By 1840 there were 40 Jews living in the town, and 90 Jews living there in 1941.
