Historical overview

Information on the cemetery’s establishment is not available, but it is marked on a Russian map from 1931. According to local resident Raisa Irzhevskaya, who was born in 1955, the Jewish gravestones were there when she was a child, which indicates that the cemetery was demolished in the 1960s.

Little is known about Mayaky. In 1897, its Jewish population numbered 648 individuals (14% of the total population). It was reduced to 178 in 1926. During WWII, Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.
