Historical overview
The Jewish cemetery was founded in 1888 and nationalized in 1947. The earliest burial dates to 1887 and the latest to 1933.
Kneževi Vinogradi is a village and municipality situated in Osijek-Baranja County. In the era of the Roman Empire, the settlement of Donatium was located on the site of the modern village. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the land was inhabited mainly by Hungarians. In 1554, during the years of Ottoman rule, 37 families lived in the village. After at the end of Ottoman rule, the village began to develop economically, especially in the fields of winemaking and in other crafts.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Hungarians, Croats, Germans, and Serbs lived in the village. In 1910. the village had 2,806 inhabitants. The local Jewish community owned a cemetery and a synagogue. The synagogue was abandoned after the Jewish community moved to Osijek after the beginning of World War I. The synagogue’s building was sold in 1948 and still exists today.
