Kartuzy Jewish Cemetery
Cemetery Information
Historical overview
The Jewish cemetery was completely razed to the ground, writes Elżbieta Pintus in her memoirs from the beginning of World War II. The inhabitants of Kartuzy remember that the matzevot were gathered on one of the neighbouring properties, where they were located until the 1970’s. Most likely, the burial place of local Jews was completely destroyed by the Communists in January 1970, at around the same period they destroyed the surrounding Protestant cemeteries.
No traces of the old matzevot have survived. Until today, the place of the cemetery has not been developed but there is a housing estate nearby. The Society of Kartuzy Lovers intends to commemorate the place by putting up a commemorative plaque. There are also plans to create a municipal park on the site of the Jewish cemetery.
