Historical overview
The Jewish cemetery of Hajdúdorog was established as early as 1849, since the oldest tombstone found in the cemetery dates to that year. The latest tombstone was erected in 1950. The cemetery is said to have been bought in 1963 by the local council. It has been fenced and is maintained by the Heritage Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries.
Jews first settled in Hajdúdorog at the beginning of the 19th century after which their population numbers increased. The Harstein family founded the Jewish Community in Hajdúdorog between 1848-50. Few of the Jews of Hajdúdorog survived the Holocaust, and only a few of the survivors returned to the town. The Torah scrolls were cut into pieces to create insoles for shoes. They were later buried in the cemetery. Among the survivors was Samuel Reichmann, who in 1957 sold the synagoge on behalf of the former Jewish community.
