Historical overview

The Jewish cemetery of Gelénes existed as early as 1865, since it appears on the cadastral map of that year. The latest tombstones found in the cemetery date to 1942. The cemetery has not been fenced.

According to the 1880 census, there were 48 Jews in Gelénes in that year. By 1910, the Jewish population had increased to 67 – the peak of the Jewish population in Gelénes. After this, the Jewish population continually decreased. There were 52 Jews in 1920, 37 in 1930, and 23 in 1941. According to Yad Vashem’s database, 26 Jews from Gelénes were murdered in Holocaust.
