Historical overview

There appears to have been several Jewish cemeteries in Bihartorda. This cemetery was established after 1886, since it does not appear on the cadastral map of that year. The earliest tombstone found in the cemetery dates to 1895, while the latest was erected in 1987. The cemetery has been fenced.

Bihartorda is a village in Hajdú-Bihar County, located between Biharnagybajom and Berettyóújfalu. In 1880, Jews accounted for 56 people of the village’s total population of 1,510. By 1910, the Jewish population grew to 83, however the population decreased over the following years and by 1941, only 25 Jews remained in the village. As the Jewish community in Bihartorda was rather small, there was only a shtiebl (room of worship) in the village. It belonged to the registry area of Biharnagybajom.
