Historical overview
The Jewish cemetery in Besenyőd existed as early as 1870, as it appears on the cadastral map from that year. The cemetery appears to have been destroyed at an unknown time.
Besenyőd is a village in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. The Jewish population in 1840 was 98, however it fell to 24 by 1880, at which time the town’s population was 554. The number of Jewish residents reached 40 in 1910 but continued to decrease afterwards. In 1941, Jews accounted for no more than 28 of the village’s total population (918). In 1885, the small communities of Besenyőd, Encsencs, Kisléta, Levelek, Magy, Máriapócs, Nyírbéltek, Nyírbogát, Nyírgyulaj, Nyírlugos, Ófehértó, Pilis, and Pócspetri joined the Orthodox community of Nyírbátor. The Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Archives lists 58 victims of the Holocaust from the villages of Besenyőd and Levelek. There is a World War I memorial and a World War II memorial located in a small park at the junction of Kossuth Street and Petőfi Street.
