Historical overview

There is no available information on the period of the cemetery’s demolition. Balsiu (Balsiai; Yid. Balsh) was a village near Silale in the Taurage district. There is a Jewish cemetery there, which is the only evidence of Jewish presence in the village. Jews were known to be here in the 17th century, however Jews may have moved to nearby Silale, when in 1662 a community was formed there.
