Historical overview
The Jewish cemetery in Aleksandrów Kujawski was probably established at the end of the 19th century with the independence of the local religious community. The necropolis was established on a large hill to the east of the city, at the intersection of today's Parkowa and Wspólna streets.
During World War II, on the order of the Germans, the cemetery was devastated and the tombstones were used for road works. The destruction process probably continued after 1945. To this day, no original matzevot have survived in the necropolis. A dozen or so years ago, during the widening of the road, part of the slope on which the cemetery is located was removed. The bones excavated at that time were taken to the anthropology department of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. On September 10, 2009, thanks to the efforts of local community activists - including Zbigniew Sołtysiński and Adam Brzuszkiewicz - and the city authorities, a monument commemorating the Jews of Aleksandrów was unveiled on the edge of the cemetery.
