Philip Carmel, our CEO, presented ESJF’s report on surveys of Jewish cemeteries in Slovakia at the conference in Bratislava

This report is the most comprehensive survey of Slovakian cemeteries ever produced and includes 745 sites visited by ESJF over a five-year period (link in the comments).

The conference, organized by ESJF together with the Federation of Jewish Communities in Slovakia (Židia na Slovensku, ÚZŽNO), was aimed at discussing the protection of Jewish cemeteries in Slovakia, including opportunities for mapping, fencing, and preservation, as well as practical field experiences.

Speakers at the opening included Richard Raši, Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic (Národná rada Slovenskej republiky); Richard Duda, Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities; H.E. Jacob Yanovsky, Ambassador of Israel to Slovakia (Izrael na Slovensku); Rabbi Isaac Shapira, founder and chair of ESJF; and Philip Carmel, ESJF CEO. The event was attended by diplomats and experts in cultural heritage preservation.

As part of the event, people who have long been dedicated to protecting cemeteries in their regions were honored with the Eugen Bárkány Award: Albert Marenčin, Zuzana Bobrovská, Miloš Dudáš, and Milan Ostrovský.

We thank everyone who attended the conference, all the organizers, in particular Martin Kornfeld, Secretary General of ÚZŽNO, and all those who support us in our work.
