Currently, ESJF is carrying out fencing work at this cemetery, with our contractors and coordinators working on site. During these works, matzevot were discovered in the village and returned to the burial place.
This is a very common situation with Jewish cemeteries, as tombstones were often removed or taken by authorities or local residents in the past and used for road construction or other building projects.
Therefore, should fragments of Jewish gravestones be found, they are encouraged to be respectfully collected and brought back to the local Jewish cemetery.
The construction of the metal fence at the Jewish cemetery in Giurtelecu Șimleului is made possible thanks to the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office, as well as the work of our local coordinator in Romania and the President of the Jewish Community of Sălaj, Dan Has.
