Remarks were delivered by Mayor Dr. Albert Bálint Ópályi Község Önkormányzata, Chief Rabbi Zsolt Markovics, Philip Carmel, CEO of ESJF, and Dr. András Zima, Director of the Páva Street Holocaust Memorial Center, who spoke on behalf of the President of MAZSIHISZ. Leaders of all churches in Opályi were also present and shared a few words of remembrance. The event brought together local residents, MPs, and students. Rabbi Berger and his wife, whose family originally came from the town, attended the ceremony, traveling specially from the United States for the occasion.
Special thanks go to Mária Baranyi, ESJF country coordinator, whose support was invaluable throughout the organizational process.
The fencing of the Jewish cemetery in Opályi, completed in February, was made possible through the generous support of the German Federal Foreign Office, a private donor from the United States, and the help of our partners at the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities.
As part of the commemorative events yesterday, a memorial plaque was also unveiled at the site of the former synagogue. Donated by a local entrepreneur, the plaque honors the Jewish residents of Opályi who were deported during the Holocaust and murdered under Nazi persecution.
