The mass grave contains the remains of three Jews who were shot by the Hungarian army in September 1940, during a series of massacres in Northern Transylvania. The victims were buried by local villagers and the Christian priest, as there was no rabbi in the area at the time. The priest decided to bury them in the village cemetery so that their remains would be protected from wild animals.
According to Dan Has, President of the Jewish Community of Sălaj (Comunitatea Evreilor Zalau Sj), the original memorial had deteriorated to the point where its inscription was no longer legible. At his initiative, ESJF erected a new memorial and built a fence around the mass grave to protect and mark the site.
