Surveys undertaken by the ESJF in 2018 demonstrate that the Jewish cemeteries of the Volynʼ region, the richest historical source of the region’s early Jewish history, are mostly lost. Tombstones were found on a total of 16 cemeteries.
However, in most cases only a few tombstones or their fragments are preserved, while the cemeteries were destroyed.
The Turiisk new Jewish cemetery is one of such examples, with at least 15 tombstones still preserved on the site.
ESJF is now carrying out fencing work at the cemetery, making it the seventh Jewish cemetery in Ukraine to be fenced this year with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
