The Concluding Conference of the “Preserving Jewish Cemeteries” concludes an 18 month project undertaken jointly by the ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, Centropa and the Foundation for Jewish Heritage which has focused on preserving Jewish cemeteries in seven European countries. As a core deliverable of the EU’s strategy for combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, our efforts have involved raising awareness in local communities, implementing educational projects, and integrating Jewish cemeteries into the school curriculum.
The project builds upon two earlier EU-funded Pilot Projects which saw over 4,000 Jewish cemeteries surveyed in seven European countries, the largest ever survey of the condition of Jewish cemeteries in villages and towns across Central and Eastern Europe where Jewish communities were wiped out in the Holocaust.
It has been the goal of this project to utilize the unique resource of what is so often the last physical witness to centuries of Jewish life in these settlements across the European continent. This conference will in particular highlight the educational and cultural value of these sites, focusing on the groundbreaking projects involving teachers and students across the project countries.
