Today is the second day of our two-day teacher training event at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, “Teaching Jewish heritage in your class. Using Jewish cemeteries in education”, run in conjunction with our partners at Centropa.
The event is off to a good start – yesterday, attendees took part in a number of activities, including a workshop on interpreting the symbols on Jewish tombstones with Anna Wencel of the Galicia Jewish Museum, screenings of short films by ESJF and Centropa, and a keynote address from Dr Leszek Hońdo.
Today, the seminar continues with a guided tour of the new Jewish cemetery, led by Bartosz Wencel, a Centropa workshop on educational filmmaking, and a lecture on the Jewish history of Poland from Edyta Gawron. Participants will also work as groups to design educational projects about Jewish cemeteries, which they will then present to the rest of the attendees.
This is the first event of the educational programme of our EU-funded Pilot Project, “Protecting the Jewish Cemeteries of Europe”, for which ESJF has teamed up with Centropa and the Foundation for Jewish Heritage, and will be running similar educational seminars across 7 European countries over the coming months.
It is fantastic to be carrying out an event like this live on site again, and to be working with such enthusiastic, engaged participants.
