ESJF workshop on drone technology in Kyiv was a great success despite on-going war

The EU workshop we hosted last week over the 16th and 17th November 2022 was exciting, interesting and above all a great success! Over the two days, we gained a small insight into the difficulties the citizens of Ukraine have, unfortunately, on a daily basis. The first day started in the basement instead of the classroom, with the alarm going off loudly, because of an aerial attack. This was a normality for most after being shelled the previous day. Nevertheless, the students of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences Of Ukraine (Факультет землевпорядкування НУБіП ) were curious, eager and anxious, all at the same time, to learn all about drone technology.

Klara V Lisinski, our EU Project Manager, loved that we were able to showcase drones, outside of tools of destruction, horror and pain, but as tools for revival and salvation to save cultural heritage, in our case Jewish cultural heritage by using drones and 3D mapping. Our chief of these projects, Kyiv Office Director, Alexander Bessarab was also present, and highlighted the importance of using this technology in the field of Jewish heritage preservation. After that the two day workshop was held by Ukrainian drone experts Tetiana Kondratenko and Hlib Lisovyi, who gave an intensive crash course on UAV data processing.

We hope that training young people on this topic will help preserve Ukraine’s rich Jewish cultural heritage for generations to come by contributing to the understanding that Jewish heritage is a vital part of our joint European heritage which must be cared for by all. Truly great two days, something we shall definitely try to repeat!
