ESJF national seminar on Jewish cemetery preservation brought together more than 20 museum professionals, local historians, and cultural heritage specialists in Budapest for two days of learning and discussion.
We are honoured to have the seminar opened by Prof. Dr. Andor Grósz, President of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ-Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége); Dr. Ulrich Ernst, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy Budapest (Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hungary); Dr. Zsófia Barta, Head of Department at the Ministry of Social Relations and Culture; Katalin Bogyay, President of the Hungarian National Committee for UNESCO (Az UNESCO Magyar Nemzeti Bizottsága); and Alexandra Fishel, ESJF Educational Project Officer.
This time, the programme focused on the role of Jewish cemeteries within the broader context of Jewish material heritage in Hungary. The sessions covered topics related to Jewish religion and everyday life; methodologies for working with Jewish collections in archives and museums.
