ESJF Coordinator for Central Europe, Ian Galevskii, and Rabbi Moshe Hershaft of the Committee for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe (CPJCE) met with local authorities in Kazimierz Dolny to discuss plans to install a protective fence around the old Jewish cemetery.
The discussion brought together Jan Łazicki, Plenipotentiary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Contacts with the Jewish Diaspora, Artur Pomianowski, Mayor of Kazimierz Dolny, Dariusz Kopciowski, Lublin Provincial Conservator of Monuments, Ewa Zdolińska, representing the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and Maciej Rymkiewicz, representing the National Heritage Board of Poland.
We are sincerely grateful to Piotr Puchta for his assistance in organizing this meeting in Kazimierz Dolny. We would also like to thank Shlomo Taub, whose ancestor is buried in this Jewish cemetery and who has been making significant efforts to support the installation of a protective fence around the site.
Along works leading to the installation of a protective fence, the escarpment on which the cemetery is located, devastated by German soldiers during World War II, will be properly secured to prevent the rain water from washing out the remains of people resting in this place.
We hope that a protective fence will soon be installed around the cemetery and that the necessary conservation works will be carried out, marking an important step toward preserving the site and showing respect for those buried there.
