ESJF have completed the installation of a protective fence at the Jewish cemetery in Luchynets

We have completed the installation of a protective fence at the Jewish cemetery in Luchynets, Vinnytsia region, which is the first Jewish cemetery in Ukraine fenced this year.

At the same time, fencing work is currently underway at several other cemeteries across the country.

Jews have lived in Luchynets since at least the early 18th century. The once-thriving Jewish community, once around a thousand strong, is now preserved in memory through its cemetery.

Approximately 300 tombstones have been preserved there, with the oldest dating back to the 1750s. A tombstone from 1752 has been documented, and it is possible that even older stones will be uncovered after further clearing.

The cemetery remained in use after WWII, with the most recent burial taking place in 2013.

The Luchynets Jewish cemetery is now protected by a newly installed metal fence, thanks to financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office.
