The site is bordered on one side by a country road and on the other by residential houses, and it is now protected by a proper fence.
The cemetery dates back to at least 1850, based on the earliest tombstone identified there. The most recent tombstone discovered is from 1943. Several tombstones at the site have been restored, including one that now serves as a cenotaph commemorating Shoah victims.
Buj is a settlement in northern Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, in the Nyírség region, north of the town of Nyíregyháza. In 1880, out of 2,237 residents, 247 were Jewish, constituting 11% of the total.
The fencing of the Jewish cemetery in Buj was made possible through the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office, with assistance from the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities, and in particular thanks to the efforts of country coordinator Mária Baranyi.
