The Jewish cemetery in Poiana Blenchii has around 15 preserved tombstones dating from at least 1912 to the late 1930s. The cemetery is located next to a Christian cemetery. This made fencing the site especially urgent, helping to protect the cemetery and its remaining tombstones.
This is already the fifth Jewish cemetery ESJF has fenced in Romania this year.
The village of Poiana Blenchii is located in Transylvania. Ashkenazi Jews settled there in the first half of the 19th century. By 1941, 24 Jews lived in Poiana Blenchii.
During the Shoah, most of them were murdered, including some who were deported to the Auschwitz and Buchenwald Nazi concentration camps.
The construction of the metal fence at the Poiana Blenchii Jewish cemetery was made possible thanks to the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office, and the work of our local coordinator in Romania and the President of the Jewish Community of Sălaj, Dan Has.
