The village of Opályi is located in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg region – an area that borders Slovakia and Ukraine and has an exceptionally high and unique concentration of Jewish cemeteries. The Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg region has 414 such burial sites, as confirmed by our surveys.
As the majority of them require urgent physical protection, ESJF pays special attention to cemeteries in this region.
The fencing of the Jewish cemetery in Opályi was made possible thanks to financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office, a private donation from the United States, the help of our partners at the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ-Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége), and our country coordinator, Mária Baranyi.
