This burial site urgently needed protection, as it is located right by the road and had no clear boundaries. When ESJF visited the cemetery a few years ago during surveys, most of the 20 remaining tombstones — dating from 1902 to 1942 — were found broken for unknown reasons.
This is why the decision was made to install a solid concrete fence as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
The fencing of the Jewish cemetery in Lónya was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office of Germany), the help of our partners at the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ-Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége), and especially our country coordinator, Mária Baranyi.
