ESJF collaborates with the Brama Grodzka (Grodzka Gate) – NN Theatre Centre for Lublin EU masterclass

We are happy to announce that we will be collaborating with the Brama Grodzka (Grodzka Gate) – NN Theatre Centre in Lublin, Poland for our next two-day masterclass, which will be dedicated to the heritage of the Jewish cemeteries in the south-eastern Poland. During the masterclass, we will also launch our Regional Cemetery Association initiative for grass-root activists involved in the preservation of Jewish cemeteries!

We are looking forward to hosting our masterclass at the “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre, which is a local government cultural institution based in Lublin. In its activities, the Centre draws on the symbolic and historical significance of its residence in the Grodzka Gate, also known as the Jewish Gate. The Gate used to be a passage from the Christian to the Jewish part of the city, a meeting place of various cultures, traditions and religions.

In 1939, Lublin had close to 120,000 citizens, including about 43,000 Jews. During the Second World War, the Nazis murdered the Jewish inhabitants of Lublin and destroyed the Jewish district. As such, the “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre is a crucial institution in the process of regaining memory of the forgotten past of the Jewish community in Lublin by the local Polish society. Alongside the ESJF, the masterclass preparatory team will be joined by PhD Teresa Klimowicz and Monika Tarajko, experts from The “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre and Maria-Curie Skłodowska University.

The masterclass will take place between the 23rd-24th of October. Stay tuned for more information on registration!

Both of these activities will take place within the framework of our European Commission grant with our consortium partners the Foundation for Jewish Heritage and Centropa.
