On Monday, August 21, an education event took place in the village of Romaniv. The event was attended by local history teachers, high school students, local historians, museum workers and employees of the village council. Speakers were Yakiv Yakovenko, a senior researcher at the Kyiv City History Museum, and Petro Yakovenko, a historian. After the lecture , all those willing went to the Jewish cemetery for a practical lesson on Jewish epigraphy.
Romaniv is first mentioned in the Lithuanian metric of the 15th century. The first mention of Jews dates back to 1787, and in 1897 the Jewish population was 2,599 (46% of the total population). The Jewish cemetery has been recorded on maps since the end of the 19th century, and until now it serves as a burial place for Jews.
We express our sincere thanks to the employees of the Romanivsk settlement council and personally to the head of the humanitarian department, Oksana Leonidivna, for their help in organizing and holding the event. This event was made possible thanks to the financial support of the German government and the Auswärtiges Amt foundation.
