This is the highest percentage of destroyed Jewish cemeteries recorded by ESJF during the surveys in 11 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. By comparison, the figures are 51% in Greece, 35% in Ukraine, and 11% in Slovakia.

Among the factors influencing the destruction of Jewish cemeteries in the past were the features of the Shoah in the region, the decisions and policies of the local authorities, the presence of the Jewish population and communities in the post-war period, and the general level of antisemitism in the region.

To learn more about the historical context and current state of Jewish cemeteries in Poland, see the new ESJF report, which is currently the most comprehensive resource available on the topic.
