Work in Serbia is moving forward at full speed. We’ve just completed the installation of a fence around the Jewish cemetery in Pivnice!
Around 25 tombstones have survived at this site, dating from the 1850s to the early 20th century.
Like many Jewish communities at the time, Pivnice’s was wiped out in the Shoah. The exact number of victims remains unknown, as most of its Jews had moved to larger cities before World War II and were later murdered, many in Auschwitz.
The Pivnice Jewish cemetery is an important historical and cultural landmark, a reminder of the thriving Jewish community that once played a vital role in the village’s economic, social, and cultural life.
The fencing project at the Jewish cemetery in Pivnice was funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office) and made possible with the help of our partners at the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, especially our country coordinator, Ladislav Trajer.
