Several years ago, Yana, a student at Shatava Lyceum in Ukraine, wrote a paper for the Junior Academy of Sciences focusing on the Jewish cemetery in her village. During her thesis defense, Yana was asked whether she could read the epitaphs on the tombstones — at the time, she could not.
This week, Yana attended an ESJF workshop in her hometown and received educational materials. Afterward, she told us that she now feels much more confident about continuing her research.
We are happy that Yana now has more resources and motivation to further explore this significant historical site in her hometown. The educational event at the Shatava Jewish cemetery, which we had previously fenced, was made possible thanks to funding from the Auswärtiges Amt (German Federal Foreign Office).
