The ESJF visits Korycin, Poland for educational event under German funding

The fifth stop on the ESJF’s educational tour around Poland funded by the Auswärtiges Amt was Korycin, a village in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The Korycin Jewish cemetery was fenced by the ESJF in 2016 in cooperation with Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland – FODŻ.

During the event, Yulia Oreshina, Associate Professor at the Georgian American University, discussed the importance of protecting Jewish heritage sites and introduced the main activities of ESJF to the local administration, cultural centre, school teachers and youth. Following the lecture, participants visited the local Jewish cemetery, where the schoolchildren were eagar to use their newly acquired knowledge on reading Jewish tombstones.

The event was co-organised by the local administration Gmina Korycin and the local cultural centre Gminny Ośrodek Kultury, Sportu i Turystyki w Korycinie. We thank all who attended for supporting us in our mission to preserve Jewish cemeteries. We also would like to thank Mirosław Lech – local wójt (head of the community), Ewa Michnowicz from the local cultural centre, Yulia and Alexandra Fishel in particular for helping to organise this event!
