Over 200 people reached by ESJF’s educational tour around Poland

During the ESJF’s educational tour that took place in Poland between 26th April – 6th May at sites previously fenced under funding from the Auswärtiges Amt, we met with over 200 people at 11 locations to speak about the importance of preserving Jewish cemeteries. The last site which the ESJF visited was the Mińsk Mazowiecki Jewish cemetery. Before the war, Mińsk Mazowiecki was a prominent Jewish community in the Warsaw region. The Nazis installed a ghetto in the town which was liquidated on August 21, 1942, which led to majority of the Jewish community being sent to the Treblinka death camp.

The ESJF educational event took place at the local library, Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna w Mińsku Mazowieckim, and was co-organised by a local group – Society of Friends of Minsk Mazowiecki / Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Mińska Mazowieckiego. The representatives of the Society presented information about the town’s past and several publications about the town. After a lecture by Yulia Oreshina, Associate Professor at the Georgian American University, on Jewish cemeteries, participants visited the Mińsk Mazowiecki Jewish cemetery and used their newly developed knowledge on reading and analysing the tombstones. They also lit a candle to commemorate the local Jewish community.

We thank you all for finding the time to participate and for highlighting the importance of Jewish heritage at the local level. We also would like to thank Katarzyna Łaziuk- the Head of the Department of Promotion, Culture and Sport at the Administration of City of Mińsk Mazowiecki, Marek Łodyga – the head of the Society of Friends of Mińsk Mazowiecki, Yulia and Alexandra Fishel in particular for supporting the organisation of this event!
