On Friday, the letter of authorisation from the administration of Rudnya Raion, Smolensk Regional Council, to commence the fencing project for Lyubavichi Jewish cemetery arrived at our offices in Kyiv. This is a special project, being carried out by ESJF in collaboration with our partners at the Geder Avos Jewish Heritage Group.
The third and fourth rebbes of the Chabid Chassidic dynasty are buried in Lyubavichi, the namesake and former centre of the Chabad movement in the early 19th and 20th centuries. During World War II, the Nazis murdered almost 500 Jews in Lyubavichi, effectively putting an end to Jewish community life in the village.
We would like to extend our thanks to Rabbi Moshe Rubin for initiating this project and acting as the driving force behind it.
