We are happy to report that we have completed work on new protective fencing at two Jewish cemeteries in the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine – Banyliv-Pidhirny and Klishkivtsi.
ESJF first visited these cemeteries in 2019, as part of our European Commission-funded pilot project, “Protecting the Jewish Cemeteries of Europe”. At the time, the sites were overgrown with vegetation. However, with the installation of these new fences, generously funded by the Auswärtiges Amt Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, these fascinating cemeteries are again safe and visible to passersby.
With the completion of work here, ESJF has fenced 24 cemeteries in Ukraine this year, bringing the total number of sites we have fenced in the country to 135!
As 2021 approaches, we look forward to bringing you along with us as we continue protecting these vital sites.
